Iceland - Earth, ice, wind and fire

Island01

After two full weeks of travel in Iceland all I can say is, wow! The diversity of subjects will make any photographer jump for joy. Though I have only seen part of this land, the first time I set foot on the island of Vestmannaeyjar I was in for a big surprise, volcanic activity. The volcano that had erupted in 1973 is still smoking. With sunrise at 03h00 I was up for the climb to the top and by 05h00 I was at the summit. On my way up I could feel the ground getting warmer and I could smell the sulphur fumes in the air. The evening rain had made the steam even more apparent. With my luck, I was greeted with a rainbow and warm sunlight. With my palm on the ground I could feel that it was still, very much alive.

Arriving on the mainland the signs of volcanic activity are ever so present. Lava flows from the past are covered with humid moss that keeps on growing. They look like sleeping monsters from the deep. The addition of the landscape renders it as if you are on another planet. The ever winding roads continually bombard you with endless possibilities.

Sunrise here in July is around 03h00 and sunset is close to midnight. Yes - very long days with no night. Rivers, waterfalls, geysers are simply just everywhere.

When I left home at the end of March there was snow and ice. Well, just to make me feel at home, we were greeted with a bay full of icebergs. In the background we could see from where these icebergs had come from, the Vatnajokull Glacier. An impressive sight.

      For those who enjoy bird photography you are in for a treat. Near the bay itself, adult Terns where training their young on how to fish. All you had to do was sit down and watch the action all around you. Of course I did more than just watch.
      These last weeks have been unforgettable. Being present to such opposing forces is truly a humbling experience. Too much to put into one blog. Upon my return I will start preparing my presentation which is due for April 2009 for www.sppq.com .
      Our voyage is not over.

Islande – La terre, la glace, le vent et le feu

Après deux semaines de voyage en Islande, je peux tout simplement dire, wow! La diversité de sujets peut rendre un photographe complètement fou de joie. Même si je n’ai pas tout vu l’Islande, en mettant les pieds sur l’île de Vestmannaeyjar, une surprise m’attendait : l’activité volcanique. Le volcan qui était en éruption en 1973 fumait encore. Au lever du soleil à 03h00 j’étais prêt pour me rendre au sommet et j’y suis arrivé vers 05h00. Pendant l’ascension je sentais la chaleur et l’odeur du souffre. La pluie de la veille mettait la vapeur en évidence. Là-haut, un arc-en-ciel m’attendait avec cette belle lumière du matin. J’ai mis la paume de ma main sur le sol et je percevais que le volcan était encore bien en vie.

En arrivant sur l’île principale, on peut facilement voir l’effet de l’activité volcanique partout. Des coulées de lave du passé sont couvertes de mousse humide qui pousse continuellement. Elles ressemblent à des monstres du fond de la terre. Avec un arrière-plan de montagnes, cela nous donne l’impression d’être sur une autre planète.

Les chemins sinueux nous offrent des possibilités sans fin. Le lever du soleil en juillet est vers 03h00 et le coucher vers minuit. Oui, des journées longues et de courtes nuits. Les rivières, chutes d’eaux, geysers sont simplement partout.

Au départ de chez moi en mars, il y avait encore de la glace et de la neige. Ici, pour que je me sente comme chez-nous, nous avons été accueillis par une baie pleine d’icebergs. Derrière, nous pouvions voir d’où ces icebergs venaient : du glacier de Vatnajokull. Une scène impressionnante!

Pour ceux qui aiment la photographie d’oiseaux, un spectacle incroyable vous attend. Près de la baie, les sternes adultes donnaient des cours à leurs petits sur l’art de la pêche. Il suffisait de s’asseoir et d’admirer la session. Bien sûr, j’ai fait plus que ça!

Ces dernières semaines étaient inoubliables. Être parmi ces forces opposées est une leçon d’humilité. Beaucoup d’information pour un seul blog. Dès mon retour, je commencerai à préparer ma présentation pour la SPPQ (www.sppq.com) pour avril 2009.
