So many encounters, challenges, discoveries, intense moments and especially, lots of water. A small boat that is 250 miles from land is truly alone, but wait, we are never really alone. We are surrounded by nature, the sky, waves, dolphins and when we were close to land we were greeted by Kittiwakes, the sailors friend, who where just happy to see us.

In this electronic age, we always need a backup system which is reliable. Paper marine charts are always on hand and used to identify a buoy, a lighthouse or other fixed point and also our position.

http://www.hi-arts.co.uk/ian-stephen-blog.htm

The river Loire is big and the currents can be strong. Our last arrival point is about 20 miles upstream and we have to enter the river at slack tide or at the beginning of high water. Without this surge we would easily return to the sea. Our course went fairly well but this is not always the case. A large cargo ship filled with gasoline had passed us near the bridge at Saint Nazaire. And one hour later it had run aground on the south side of the river channel. A strong north easterly had put it off course and it couldn’t correct. Not a good place to be at all. A half hour later we passed it carefully and continued on our way.

The marina at Cordemais was not all that far away because we could see the red and white chimneys of the electricity generating plant. The engine was revved at 2200 and we were making out final approach. Michel was proud to display his flags from the places that we had visited, even if they showed some weathering.

From afar we could see some people at the waters edge, for us, for us we asked ourselves. Well yes, there was a welcoming comity of about 30 people with streamers. Michel, Ian and I were completely overwhelmed to see that they had taken the time to greet us. As we arrived to the deck the champagne, the bread, meats, cheeses and friends that we had not seen in 6 months were taking us into their arms. What a perfect ending to a fantastic voyage.

I adapted to life at sea fairly well and after a short while I felt comfortable on the water with my shipmate, Michel. We encountered some rough times together but all went well. Teamwork seems to be a time proven recipe for any project.

When we left Stornoway a stray cat named, Ian, joined us aboard Bonnie. Good mannered and polite, we decided to keep him. Another good reason is that Ian has been a sailor for the better part of his life with 20 years in the coast guard. Look at the last blog.

<class="msonormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: .5in;"></class="msonormal">
As we left Stornoway we made good time to arrive in Port Ellen in thirty hours. A short stop over to recharge and then off again to Howth, Ireland near Dublin. Living onboard a small ship can be as comfortable as we want it to be. Eating well, at least for me, is of the up most importance. Here are some of the meals that we took time to prepare:
1-Salmon with white cream sauce, boiled eggs, potatoes, onions with a touch of parsley.

2-Lamb’s liver with potatoes, carrots and apple slices lightly fried.

3-Freshley caught Mackerel with rice and carrots. 4-Huge pot of Chilé which lasts for several days and easy to reheat. All of these meals are accompanied with wine, of course. After all, we are on a French boat.

While at Port Ellen I came upon a field of Blackberries so I decided to pick to my heart’s content and came away with 2 litres worth. Add some cream and sugar and voila!
The crossings are done to coincide with weather and tides. Along the way anything can happen. There is always a person on watch, 24/7. At night we can encounter fishing boats, ferries and cargo ships and we may or may not have to adjust our course. Each situation is unique. In the daytime things are more relaxed because we can see much more.
During our last crossing from Howth to Saint Mary’s, Scilly we encountered a school of Dolphins who wanted to show off their talents and we were not disappointed. My Nikon D300 with my 24-120mm VR lens was put to good use. Here are the conditions that I was faced with. Three metre waves, 25 kn winds, a moving boat with a fast moving subject, or should I say subjects, that could pop up out of nowhere. I managed to get about 20 shots but one, for me is a winner. You be the judge.
Our last leg is from Scilly to Cordemais in France where Bonnie will be lifted to land. A few days to get my things together and I will return home with a suitcase full of good memories and a heart full of friends.

Travelling by sailboat during a long voyage puts time into a totally different perspective. For some reason, time stops. You have time to be with yourself and at times, when the opportunity presents itself, develop special moments with a select few.

When I accepted to be part of this crew, I knew next to nothing about them and they knew even less about me. As time moved on, relationships gradually deepened and became part of the whole event.

Jean Tchigik, Delphinéa’s captain, with his knowledge about the weather and sense of humour, became a key figure. On one day, just before the sun set, he agreed to be part of a shot taken from the bow of his boat. Right place at the right time.

Édith Martin, his partner, took the time to make the simplest of meals, a pleasure to eat. She also took her place on the night watch when the time came.

After 20 years at the same job, he retired only a few months before leaving on the trip of a lifetime.

Along the way during these five months we met people who became part of the experience. Gudmundur Jacobson, shipyard owner in Vagur, was so helpful when we needed someone with special tools and talents. He was extremely happy to give us his valuable time when we needed it most. He even invited us to his home for diner where we had the privilege of meeting his family.

Mr. Tsering was travelling in the Uk with his French wife, and we had a common interest, Tibet. We were flying the Tibetflag. They took the time to come on board for a photoshoot.
Ian Stephen, from Stornoway, had made contact with us during our first stop over in June. On our way back we had to stop at this same port and by chance he was part of a presentation Saturday night at the local theatre (www.theatrehebrides.com) . He is a writer, poet and sailor. That Saturday night we were exposed to a variety of local talent that surpassed our expectations. Time well spent.

After two full weeks of travel in Iceland all I can say is, wow! The diversity of subjects will make any photographer jump for joy. Though I have only seen part of this land, the first time I set foot on the island of Vestmannaeyjar I was in for a big surprise, volcanic activity. The volcano that had erupted in 1973 is still smoking. With sunrise at 03h00 I was up for the climb to the top and by 05h00 I was at the summit. On my way up I could feel the ground getting warmer and I could smell the sulphur fumes in the air. The evening rain had made the steam even more apparent. With my luck, I was greeted with a rainbow and warm sunlight. With my palm on the ground I could feel that it was still, very much alive.

Arriving on the mainland the signs of volcanic activity are ever so present. Lava flows from the past are covered with humid moss that keeps on growing. They look like sleeping monsters from the deep. The addition of the landscape renders it as if you are on another planet. The ever winding roads continually bombard you with endless possibilities.

Sunrise here in July is around 03h00 and sunset is close to midnight. Yes - very long days with no night. Rivers, waterfalls, geysers are simply just everywhere.

When I left home at the end of March there was snow and ice. Well, just to make me feel at home, we were greeted with a bay full of icebergs. In the background we could see from where these icebergs had come from, the Vatnajokull Glacier. An impressive sight.

Near the bay itself, adult Terns where training their young on how to fish. All you had to do was sit down and watch the action all around you. Of course I did more than just watch.
These last weeks have been unforgettable. Being present to such opposing forces is truly a humbling experience. Too much to put into one blog. Upon my return I will start preparing my presentation which is due for April 2009 for www.sppq.com .
          Our voyage is not over.

All stores are closed and traffic is really, light. One way to explore the area is to use the trails on the island. They lead you to the most beautiful, spectacular, rugged and unique landscapes. With my camera mounted on my tripod, all I could hear were the waves and the wind, complete tranquility and peace. Here, you don’t have to wait in line to get a front row seat. Tourism is still in its’ developing stages but given time, the Faroe Islands will become a key destination to visit. The uniqueness of the landscape, the people, their culture, way of life, simplicity, thoughtfulness, willingness to share and help are the key factors in putting the Faroes on your to do list.
